As a young woman, I was fortunate to attend New Year’s Eve services at Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wis., where Stuart Briscoe was the senior pastor. The Scripture I most remember from those occasions was Psalm 90:12, which says, “Lord, teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.”
Wisdom also is a major theme of the entire 31 chapters of Proverbs, of course. Numbering our days so that we can apply our hearts to wisdom is one of the most foundational messages in the Bible, helping us to live our lives as Christians.
It also helps us to number our days in order to understand the end times in which we live. Let me explain.I benefited from the great spiritual foundation lain in my life from earliest childhood, from my parents’ examples to the mini-revival that took place at my Wisconsin public high school thanks to the leadership of a coach who headed the Fellowship of Christian Athletes there. (All of this is chronicled fully in my book, Faith Through the Flames: A True Story of God’s Refining Grace.)
And yet it took Pastor Briscoe’s exhortation using Psalms 90:12 to get me to seek spiritual wisdom and really number my days. Verse 13 adds, “Return, O Lord, how long?” Now, that’s not traditionally a verse that is used in prophetic teaching. But if we live as if the Lord is coming, we will learn to number our days both individually, and as a church.
That’s because no other generation could ever say we are in the last days. Why not? Because the Bible tells us that the clock on the end times would start ticking again once Israel became a nation again. And Israel became a nation again in 1948.
So here we are in 2016, confronting the fact that Psalms 90:10 says, “The days of our years are three-score years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.”
Apply that verse to the days of Israel being numbered, just as our days as individuals are numbered. A score is 20 years, so fourscore years are 80 years. In 2008, we marked threescore years after 1948.
Do the math. Jesus is coming back soon.
But the Bible also says that no one knows the day or hour of Christ’s return but the Father Himself. So as an eschatologist who believes how the Word of God has limited my future vision, all I can do is try to shed some light on the direction and timing of things.
And as the owner of Real Money USA, I also can exercise my responsibility to help hundreds of clients get their financial houses in order. We also can extend that same offer to people who are just starting to understand the value of what we call “God’s Money,” silver and gold coins, and how building household assets on that foundation is the only wise way to go.
